On the 6th of March 2017, Ghana celebrates 60 years of being an independent nation.

Dr Kwame Nkrumah proudly declared Ghana’s freedom on that day back in 1957, marking a big moment in the struggle towards finally extricating this nation from colonial rule which ended on the 1st of July, 1960.

Dr Nkrumah, the charismatic leader of the Convention People’s Party, led the struggle for Independence and won the people over with his radical rhetoric and superb organisational skills. His indignant calls for ‘self government now’ conflicted with the more measured approach of the leaders of the UGCC, and in 1949 he broke away to form his own CPP.

After being imprisoned in 1950, Nkrumah emerged from prison to win elections the next year and formed the first indigenous government of Ghana.

He led as Prime Minister from then on, and then won elections once again in 1956, directly ending Ghana’s fight for self-rule. Independence day was set for 6th March the following year.

60 years later we have a lot to celebrate, as well as a lot to criticise, but this beautiful country endures.
