On the cusp of history and facing her sister in a final for the first time since 2009, Serena was not imperious but did just enough to clinch the trophy.
The win moves her past Steffi Graff to 23 Grand Slams, a record unmatched in the Open era of tennis.
Speaking after her win, Serena reserved all her praise for sister Venus, who at 36 managed to claw her way to the finals, but as usual had to play second best to her more talented younger sister.
“I really would like to take this moment to congratulate Venus. She’s an amazing person.” Serena said.
“There’s no way I would be at 23 without her. There’s no way I’d be at one without her. She’s my inspiration.
“She’s the only reason I’m standing here today. She’s the only reason the Williams sisters exist. Thank you for inspiring me. Every time you won this week, I felt like I got a win too.”
Two other open era legends would turn back the clock in Sunday’s men’s final, as 17 time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer takes on old foe Rafael Nadal.
