Barrow won elections last December but then had to flee, after former leader Yahya Jammeh refused to relinquish power.
But after a strong show of force from ECOWAS eventually pushed Jammeh out of office, Barrow’s return has been expectantly awaited, and he finally arrived in Banjul on Thursday.
A teeming crowd of excited Gambians were on hand to welcome their new President from exile, first at the airport and then through the streets of the capital.
Gambians would be hoping for a fresh start, after having survived a potential crisis from the continuation of the 22 year long dictatorship of Jammeh, who had been reluctant to relinquish power despite losing in a free and fair election.
