The Power Drunks: A Look At Africa’s Longest Serving President–And Mugabe is Not Even On Top

Inspired by an article on CNN at a time Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has refused to step down for the President elect-Adama Barrow to ascend to the highest office, we’ve decided to bring our readers a list of Africa’s longest serving presidents.

Even though the famous Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe makes the list, he’s not even at the top.

Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo from Equatorial Guinea and Jose Eduardo dos Santos (Angola) sit on top of the list, having been in power for 37 years each.

Interestingly, the one at bottom of the list has even been in power for 30 years.

Denis Sassou-Nguesso (Republic of Congo) — 33 years, nonconsecutive

Jose Eduardo dos Santos (Angola) — 37 years

King Mswati III (Swaziland) — 30 years

Paul Biya (Cameroon) — 34 years

Robert Mugabe (Zimbabwe) — 36 years

Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo (Equatorial Guinea) — 37 years

Yoweri Museveni (Uganda) — 31 years
