The Gambian Parliament have officially voted to extend the term of President Yahya Jammeh by three months.
Yahya Jammeh’s term ends at midnight today, but he has refused to abide by the results of last month’s election which handed Adama Barrow a victory.
Jammeh declared a 90 day state of emergency – incidentally the same number of days as this extension – in the country late Tuesday, attempting to block the upcoming inauguration of Barrow. The Parliament also approved the state of emergency.
ECOWAS has an army on standby in Senegal prepared to oust Jammeh, but are holding off on any decision due to concern escalated warfare would lead to mass civilian casualties.
