Legendary Egyptian player Mohamed Aboutrika has been added to Egypt’s terror watchlist upon suspicion of funding the banned Egyptian group the Muslim Brotherhood.
Aboutrika, a long time icon of the most successful Egyptian club of all time Al Ahly as well as the national team The Pharaohs, is reportedly a supporter of the group which has been banned and declared a terrorist organisation.
Aboutrika’s lawyer, Mohammed Osman, revealed the decision, one which he has described as ‘contrary to the law’.
“We will appeal this decision,” Osman said, according to the BBC.
Those placed on the terrorist watchlist are at risk of having a travel ban placed on them and their assets frozen. Aboutrika, 38, supported the candidature of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohammed Morsi who ran for President and won in 2012, before he was ousted a year later amid mounting public displeasure.
Aboutrika is one of the most decorated African players of all time, having won African Best Player of the Year (based in Africa) four times and BBC African Footballer of the Year. He won two Cup of Nations trophies with his country.
