A US man infuriated with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), showed up to pay a tax bill of $3,000 entirely in coins!
Nick Stafford from Cedar Buff, Virginia, arrived with five wheelbarrows filled with about 300,000 coins to pay the money owed.
According to the BBC, the coins were so many that the DMV’s automated counting machines could not handle it – therefore its staff had to count it all manually, which it took over seven hours to do.
Stafford got infuriated with the DMV as his inquiries to know which staff to contact over paying the sales taxes on some cars he purchased were not answered to his satisfaction, a situation he explained here.
After taking them to court over the issue and losing, he decided to pay the taxes in person with his coins.
The DMV has to take the coins, he said, because the US Coinage Act of 1965 says that coins are “legal tender for all debts, public charges, taxes and dues”.
