Former President John Dramani Mahama has decided to withdraw his request for his current Cantonments bungalow to be given to him as his official retirement home.
The ex leader, in a letter addressed to the current President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and dated Tuesday, January 10 2017, said the request is threatening the spirit of cooperation between the two parties to the transition and thus he would like to withdraw it.
The President, in a letter dated December 19 and signed by his chief of staff, Julius Debrah, had requested that the property at No. 3 Prestige Link, Cantonments and its adjoining facilities, which he has been occupying for the past eight years, should be alloted to him as his retirement home.
But controversy arose over the request as the building is the official residence of the nation’s vice presidents, which Mahama continued to live in even after becoming President. Whilst he was entitled to a retirement home, Ghanaians protested his decision to appropriate his official residence for himself.
But Mahama is seeking to bring an end to all those issues with this letter. The onus now lies on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to make a decision on the request.
