Black Stars defender Jonathan Mensah has completed a three year deal to join Major League Soccer side Columbus Crew.
Mensah, 26, moves from the Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala after a season.
The Ohio based club announced Mensah’s signing Tuesday as a’designated player’ – a special allowance made for MLS teams to sign foreign stars.
“We are pleased to announce the signing of central defender Jonathan Mensah as a Designated Player,” Crew SC sporting director and head coach Gregg Berhalter said in a statement released by the club. “Jonathan is a physically dominant central defender who at a young age has already proven himself on the world’s biggest stage. We look forward to him making an immediate impact in Columbus.”
The Black Stars defender is currently part of the squad for the 2017 Cup of Nations, which kicks off in Gabon in just over a week. He joins international teammate Harrison Afful at Crews.
Mensah, a crucial member of Ghana’s 2009 U-20 World Cup winning squad, has been an indispensable part of the Stars team since – winning 51 caps in the intervening years.
