NPP Drags Mahama To Court For Appointing CHRAJ And NCCE Bosses With Less Than Three Weeks Left In Office

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has sued the President, John Dramani Mahama, for appointing new chairpersons for the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) with less than three weeks of his tenure to go.
The party, represented by lawyer Philip Addision, filed a writ challenging the appointments of the President.
The heads of both Independent Governance institutions enjoy security of tenure, and thus cannot be removed by the incoming President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo. The NPP is arguing that the appointments by Mahama less than three weeks to when he leaves constitutes a breach of the spirit of the law, which allows him to make such appointments.
Philip Addison, in an interview with Joy News, said the NPP sees the appointments as an abuse of the Presidents powers. He said the party is seeking for the court to overturn the appointments.
President John Dramani Mahama, earlier today (Tuesday), confirmed Joseph Whittal and Josephine Nkrumah as chairpersons of the CHRAJ and NCCE respectively and had them sworn in. This is an untenable situation for the NPP, who take over power in a few weeks, yet would be saddled with last minute appointments from the outgoing President they would be forced to live with.
Case is set to be heard on January 24, 2016.
