"This Story Should Never Have Been Published In Its Original Form" – CNN Finally Apologises For Ghana Election Coverage Fiasco

CNN have finally apologised for their huge blunder in covering the Ghanaian elections, in which they sought to portray the country as being in the grip of food shortages and roiling power cuts.
In a statement released to the website The Global Voices, the network apologised for their skewed coverage, writing that “the story should never have been published in its original form”.
Ghanaian descended on the Cable News Network about a fortnight ago with the #CNNGetItRight, after their coverage of Nana Akuffo-Addo’s massive win sought to portray Ghana as a country it was not.
Ghanaians felt the network was working just to portray Ghana as dark as they do the rest of the continent in their coverage.

“The national economy will be Akufo-Addo’s major challenge. Oil reserves were discovered off the coast of Ghana in 2007, but Ghanaians struggle to obtain food and day-to-day services.” CNN wrote at the time. “Rolling blackouts are common and citizens often stand in long line to obtain products.”
With the backlash from Ghanaians, the network amended the article, putting an editor’s note at the top noting the changes.

After a lengthy piece from the Global Voices network, CNN sent out an apology to them via a spokesperson.
”This story should never have been published in its original form.” it read. “CNN’s editorial procedures were not followed, and we have thoroughly reviewed our internal processes to ensure this does not happen again.”
The network also said the original byline, which credited Lagos based Stephanie Busari as having contributed to the article, was wrong.
“The article has been corrected and Stephanie Busari’s byline was removed because she was not involved in writing this piece. We apologize for any offence caused.”
