Ghanaian movies are generally ok when they stick to what they’re good at – fun stories about witches or comedy ones featuring tenants and landlords with outrageous plots; it’s when they try to venture into technological stuff that they embarrass all of us.
We all remember the fiasco that was the movie ‘2016’, and the international embarassment it earned us when Conan picked it up and used it on his talk show.
This time, a similar Ghanaian movie, about the popular Mortal Kombat franchise, is earning Ghana some international attention, and of the good kind.
The trailer to the movie, which is quite faithful to the original movie and features some impressive fight scenes, has been making waves in Ghana recently, and has now been picked up by US technological and pop culture site The Verge.
The Vox-media owned site favourably reviews the trailer to the Ghanaian movie and ends the piece with “I want the full version, immediately.” This is a far cry from the derision Conan rained all over the atrocity known as ‘2016’.
