Lady Gaga has been secretly suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) ever since she was raped at the age of 19.
The Telegraph reports below…
In November, the singer and songwriter visited a centre for homeless LGBTQ youth in Harlem, New York as part of her work with her Born This Way Foundation.
While she was there she spoke to them about her own experiences, including her struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder. The visit to the Ali Forney Center was filmed for a segment on Today, the US daily news programme.
After visiting the centre Gaga, who was born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, said: “I told the kids today that I suffer from a mental illness, I suffer from PTSD. I’ve never told anyone that before, so here we are. But the kindness that’s shown to me by doctors as well as my family, and my friends, it’s really saved my life.”
She explained to the young people at the centre: “Meditation helps me to calm down”, adding that she must cope with her condition “every day”.
“These children are not just homeless or in need; many of them are trauma survivors. They’ve been rejected in some type of way,” Germanotta said. “My own trauma in my life has helped me understand the trauma of others.”
“I have a mental illness and I struggle with that mental illness every day,” she told the kids.
