2016 Copa Sudamericana finalists Atletico Nacional have requested for the trophy to be awarded to Brazililan side Chapecoense, after the latter lost nearly their entire squad in a plane crash late Monday.
Chapecoense were slated to meet Atletico in the first leg of the final of the tournament Wednesday, but the team’s chartered flight crashed in Colombia with 72 passengers and nine crew members on board. Only six surivors were reported, including two or three players of the team.
The final has been suspended in the wake of the crash, but in an incredibly sportsmanlike gesture, Nacional has requested the trophy be handed over to the Brazilians.
According to reports, the club has officially requested the South American federation to hand Chape the trophy as a sign of respect.
