President John Dramani Mahama has paid tribute to the late Cuban leader Fidel Castro, who passed away late on Friday in his homeland.
Fidel, who ruled the island nation for close to 50 years before retiring in 2008, was a leader who helped shape the world and would be sorely missed, Ghana’s President said of his passing.
The President wrote on social networking site twitter…
“Comrade Fidel Castro will forever remain in our hearts and minds – he helped shape the world!”
Castro passed away late Friday at the age of 90, his brother, President Raul, announced on state television.
“The commander in chief of the Cuban revolution died at 22:29 hours this evening,” he said.
A revolutionary firebrand who led the Communist revolution in his country, Fidel governed Cuba either as President or Prime Minister for 49 years, eventually handing over power to Raul in 2008 due to health problems.
Comrade Fidel Castro will forever remain in our hearts and minds – he helped shape the world!

Castro came into power in 1959, overthrowing the government of Fulgencio Batista. He implemented state run socialism and anti imperialist policies, and remained a staunch enemy of the United States due to his coziness with the then Soviet Union. This led to an economic blockade which was only lifted in recent times under President Obama.
An accomplished military tactician, Castro was a divisive figure who was as loved by his supporters as he was despised by his detractors.
There will be several days of national mourning to mark the passing of the late leader.
