8. Grace Omaboe (Maame Dokono)
Grace Omaboe, also known as Maame Dokono was a soothing balm to an aching and sore eyes back in days when she is on our screens.
She was a great and versatile actress back in the 80’s through to the early 00’s. Years ago, when I was living for television as a child, the name that dominated the Ghanaian drama scene, performance-wise, was Maame Dokono (Grace Omaboe).
She starred in many Gama films movies back in the early 90’s making her a household name. People from the 80’s and 90’s sometimes were even in confusion as to who is the best actress between Grace Nortey and her Maame Dokono.
Apart from being an excellent actress, Grace Omaboe (popularly known as Maame Dokono) has been one of the staunchest advocates of women and children’s rights in Ghana.
When roles were not coming her way anymore or to be fair on the safe side, let’s say she was being selective and choosy with scripts that came her way. She has been at it for more than 10 years. She even hosted radio and TV programmes at one time.
Which named and shamed paedophiles, rapists, wife beaters, runaway dads, child abusers and practically anyone whose criminal deeds negatively affect children and women.
Recently she was alleged to have said, scripts and roles have gone to the “dogs” and they, the professionals in their time have been sidelined.
She has always bemoaned the lack of professionalism and work ethics in the movie enterprise in the country. Though she has been overlooked for movie roles, we still got love for her on the screens and we have been wanting for her to make a come back.
I guess directors, casting agents and producers have heard Maame Dokono. What are they waiting for? We miss her greatly on our screens. We salute her for all the many patriotic things she did for the movie enterprise back in days and the country.
Indeed, we miss them!
