The NDC Member of Parliament for Salaga South in the Northern Region, Abubakari Ibrahim Dey, has entered the history books with an unprecedented donation of coffins to local mosques in his area, a donation which critics say is a desperate attempt at vote buying prior to the December elections.
The MP is locked in a tight race with Abubakari Dramani, the NPP Parliamentary candidate in the area, and his ‘donation’ is reportedly his latest attempt to pull ahead in the election.
It is an unprecedented, ballsy and somewhat baffling move that speaks a lot about our understanding of ‘democracy’ in this country.
Dey donated at least ten scented coffins to mosques in the vicinity, a move that the NPP has slammed as blatant vote buying and spiritually dangerous.
They want the Muslim leaders to burn the coffins to forestall any disaster.
“Spiritually we are also seeing how we are going to counter that but we believe that If you want to help a mosque there are so many deteriorated mosques in town which needs speakers, some cannot pay their bills and you come and supply this kind of items to the mosques; it doesn’t actually speak well” Dramani told Kasapafmonline.
“We don’t understand such a move because while the people are hungry, you have done virtually nothing in that constituency and just barely a month of election and you come and be supplying coffins for the mosques”
The candidate said they would organise a Quran recital to counter the move.
The NDC MP, for his part, admitted donating the items. His spokesperson said it was due to a request they received from some mosques about a shortage of the burial item.
