A 12 year old Egyptian boy has been engaged to his 11 year old cousin in a stunning development that has drawn condemnation across board in the Arabian North African country.
Nasser Hassan, the father of the boy, reportedly made the announcement during a wedding ceremony for his eldest son, during which negotiations were completed for the next generation to get ready for their own marriages.
Photos of the ‘engaged’ couple that were posted online received condemnation from activists and citizenry as the father was accused of trafficiking.
But he claims he did nothing wrong, saying that the children love each other and would only get married at age 18 – the legal age in Egypt.
‘”Omar has always loved Gharam so much that he used to say he will marry her when they grow up before any other man asks for her hand in marriage when she is older,” he told Egypt’s Al Watan newspaper.
“They will get married when they reach the legal age.” he added.
