A private jet carrying the players of Turkish club Fernebache was forced to make an emergency landing in Romania earlier today (Wednesday) after a bird hit the plane’s windshield and cracked it.
The aircraft was carrying the squad from Istanbul to Manchester for their Thursday night Europa league clash against Manchester United when the incident occurred.
The plane was struck by a bird on the cockpit window not long after take-off, forcing the pilots to make an emergency landing in the Romanian capital of Budapest.
“A Borajet 195/200 long range type of aircraft, registration number TC/YAT, made a successful emergency landing here shortly after midday,” Budapest airport’s spokesman Mihaly Hardy told AFP.
“The Fenerbahce players were on board and are now safely waiting in the terminal building for another aircraft, on which they will continue their journey to England.”
The plane has since arrived to take them to England.
Fernebache play Jose Mourinho’s United in matchday 3 of the UEFA Europa League Thursday night. Former United striker Robin van Persie and former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel are both part of the squad that suffered the scare and who were temporarily stranded.
