The Osu Traditional Council are petitioning the government to handover control of the Osu Castle to the Council with the cessation of its use as the seat of government.
The Council is thus calling for control to be handed back to them to be used as a tourism attraction and to create revenue for the council.
Nii Kinka Dowuona, the Osu Mantse, spoke on the issue at the launch of the World Tourism Day celebrations for this year in Accra.
According to him, the site being a World Heritage Site, it has a potential for tourism – and he even called for the entire town to be named a World Heritage Site.
“We also want to approach the Moroccan government through our Ministry of Tourism to assist us to introduce horse-drawn carts to carry visitors from one end of Osu to this square near the Osu King’s palace,” he added.
The Osu Castle (formerly Christianborg) was named as the seat of government for much of Ghana’s history, until it was recently moved to the flagstaff house.
