Former Black Stars forward Ibrahim Tanko would succeed Avram Grant as coach of the senior national team.
That’s the extraordinarily long term claim of Ghanaian soccer site Ghanasoccernet, citing sources close to the situation.
Israeli coach Avram Grant has been in charge of the team for the past two years and has done a more than adequate job with them – but his constant globetrotting and his agent’s belitilling of Ghana has never warmed him to his bosses at the FA, Ghanaians, and most especially the local press.
And with his contract set to expire after the 2017 African Cup of Nations – in February next year – the site is claiming that Tanko has been lined up to replace the former Chelsea manager.
“The 38-year-old has held informal discussions with the country’s sports ministry to take over from the former Chelsea boss when his contract runs out in February next year.” the report sensationally claims.
“Close confidantes of the soft-spoken ex-international have remained-lipped on the issue, but GHANAsoccernet.com can reveal he will be the new man barring any unforeseen contingencies.” it added.
Tanko played as a striker for the Black Stars for years, but it’s his coaching career after retirement that has caught the eye of the FA.
He worked as an assistant coach at former club SC Freiburg under German gaffer Volker Finke, and later took up the same role with Urawa Red Diamonds and FC Koln.
He also served as the assistant manager for West African neighbours Cameroon, again under Finke- and has prior experience with the Stars – having served as a scout during the 2014 Fifa World Cup for Ghana.
