Controversial hiplife star Barima Sidney has expressed immense satisfaction with the recent explosive trend of celebrities endorsing political candidates which, contrary to the public’s dislike of – he thinks is a good thing.
With the 2016 elections coming up and the political climate heating up, celebrities have been coming out in droves for political parties – with Lucky Mensah, Agya Koo, Mzbel and the likes joining the fray.
Sidney has for long been one of the most political singers in the country, and speaking on Ultimate Fm, he said that the recent trend is one of the things his activism has been fighting for.
“I said it from day one, I started this musical coup d’etat that we should all be bold and talk about social issues affecting our nation, without fear or favour, so I am very happy that celebrities are coming out to endorse this particular candidate or blah blah, the celebrities have the right to choose or endorse, I don’t see anything wrong.”
But unlike Sydney, most Ghanaians interpret such endorsements as wrong, and believe the politicians pay the musicians for their endorsement. But Sidney disagrees, and thinks for a celebrity, they should also be ready for such attacks if they endorse a candidate.
“Mr. Beautiful endorsing Mahama and Agya Koo endorsing Nana Addo, there is nothing wrong apart from they being celebrities, they believe that they could also contribute their quota, if they believe in their ideologies and can contribute or add their voices by endorsing them to come to power or retain them, there is nothing wrong, but in our part of the world, Ghana, you should be ready for so many attacks, [so] if you are ready go ahead” he added.
