OUR FOREGONE PLEASURES: 8 Things We Did As Children That Leave Us Nostalgic Every time We Remember, Wishing We Never Grew Up

One friend told me she used pluck chewing gum to chew from under tables or wherever she finds any irrespective of who may have stuck it there when she was growing up. All I could utter was a dramatic disgusting adding the “ewwww” sound to make it look even more nauseating. After my conversation with her, I found myself laughing to nothing, remembering all the equally appalling stuff I did when I was growing up--- the truth is I did far worse but in a rather cunning and mischievous way. Our childhood days are moments we reminisce and laugh at ourselves till tears sometimes struggle its way out of our eyes. The kind of home you grew up certainly determines whether your childhood days were adventurous and everything in between or otherwise. A lot of these occurrences you may not be able to relate to if you were the "dada bee" when growing up--- I mean if you had parents who had enough money to spare. Many of us as grown as we are, are still nostalgic when we remember all the things we did as children. We did a lot of silly things out of ignorance, but now ,we remember and you ask yourself, “what the hell was wrong with me?” 1. Our Sleeping Positions How many of us can tell for a fact the time they slept when they were kids. Even now that we are fully grown, we are so caught up in our daily hustle that we seldom know the time our eyes shuts to rest. The only difference is , we are now grown so we are more conscious of how we turn in our beds unlike times when we were kids. During our days as children, we slept and woke up without giving a care to the world. You sleep in a particular position and the next morning, you will find yourself in a different kingdom. I remember the many times I found my feet brushing warmly the face of my brother. As children we used to move so much about in that small bed as if we had enough space like the ocean. You are safe if your older sibling do not push you to their spot that they wetted with urine. 2. Our Mental Attitude Towards Education In our little minds, our parents were sheer wicked and were just punishing us by making us go to school each and every morning. It was no surprise how we approached the mornings--- every morning saw us searching for our school uniforms and pair of socks, of course they were always found in one dirty corner graced with sweat and dust. We wore it like that anyway. Our shoes always cried for water; you will understand if you attended a public school and if you were amongst the many whose parents were not well to do. We never took the pain to apply pomade well, every day was harmattan for us. School was always jolly for us, except those of us who weren’t good in class, but that notwithstanding, we enjoyed and when the bell rung for break time, we just knew heaven has been brought down to earth. We had so much fun in school yet we were so adamant and our parents had to insist so much before we go. How can we forget the pathetic and the one cliche and equally unbelievable lie we used to tell our parents. The I have been sacked for fees or the I am sick or the our teacher says we should not come to school today syndrome. We always knew they would not believe us yet we always found our lips pouring these phrases. 3. When We Get New Stuff When mama buy us new panties, we show them off, ‘apepapepa’ would be the game for the day. These are times that we literally lift our dresses and consistently go to the washroom with our friends just so they would see we are on something new. Anything new on u s would get an induction service. 4. “Mama Ne Dada” ‘Pilolo’(hide and seek) was a game our boys never joked with. It was the time they played “maame ne papa” with the girls they admired, they hide somewhere and practice what our parents do, anyway some were not that serious, others were so intense the boys would get dirty with the girls. Whilst some of my friends loved this very game, I just loathed it with fuming passion because almost always I played the role of the child who had to go to school. My friends were just callous, they never allowed me to enjoy the mama role. The way I wanted to practise what the grown ups did in bed “paa nu er….” 5. Christmas was Bae We never played with the only season you could eat chicken and some delicious meals plus some drinkables. We go to church in our new out fits, just to show off. We become extra neat that day. We go round to collect gifts and make friends. We all remember piccadilly and honey top biscuits plus its accompaniments. 6. The Weak Was Bullied Bullying is quite a pleasure if and only if you are not at the receiving end. Fighting cannot be left out of this, the weaker kids always suffered and they were the ones who wouldn’t shut their beaks too. These ones can tease you till you are literally crying. You drop a tear and they intensify the tease and when you are strong enough to give them a flog of a lifetime, their entire family join the battle. Funny enough, we were always bringing enmity between our parents as we the kids forget we even fought and get on with our activities with our parents holding on to nothing. 7. And Oh We Used To Soak Our Bread In The Tea Like this the best out of the lot. It is so cool doing this one. Whenever we are served with our beverage or cup of tea, we dip the bread in it, wait for it to drench and close our eyes whilst relishing the goodness on our tongues with the tea dripping from our lips way down our arms. Sometimes we would break the bread into bits and soak them into the tea. That thing just felt good, dammmit!. 8. The Thought Of A Shower Scared Us Oh we soo did not like to bath--- I do not know about others but I for one do not have a very good history in this department. I guess old habits never do die because I still do not love the whole idea of a bath. Tell me you never pulled this trick on your parent and let me give up on life already. You go into the bathroom, wet your hair and the sponge and come out saying you are done bathing (hehe). I did that several times and I was caught every time, given a lash before I am forcibly asked to go take a proper shower. Gone are the days when we were young and gay, time has dealt with us, we still recall and that feeling comes rushing back to embrace us. I guess we never really want to grow--- perhaps we just want to be given the freedom to enjoy, use and explore our youth.
