Host of Comedy Central’s ‘The Daily Show’, Trevor Noah, has been tapped to host the 2016 edition of the MTV Africa Music Awards, which is making a comeback after MTV scrapped it for a while and reinstated it two years ago.
Noah would return to his homeland of South Africa for the awards show, which would be held in Johannesburg on the 22nd of October.
Noah rose to global prominence on an unprecedented stage after he was surprisingly chosen to host the Daily Show after long time host Jon Stewart retired last year. He has since built his own niche on the show, occasionally playing up his African heritage in his jokes.
“I’m a huge fan of African music and achievement, and it’s going to be a massive pleasure celebrating them both at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2016 in my own home town of Johannesburg,” Noah said after the announcement.
“Trevor Noah is an outstanding entertainer and testament to the amazing talent that Africa has to offer the world. To have him host the MAMA, our annual celebration of Africa music, creativity and achievement, is a powerful and inspiring message. We are delighted that our first-ever show in Johannesburg will be presented by one of the city’s most loved and admired personalities.” Alex Okosi, senior vp & managing director, Viacom International Media Networks Africa, added.
The show comes off on the 22nd October in Johannesburg’s Ticketpro Dome, with performances slated for the night from Alikiba, Babes Woduma, Cassper Nyovest, Nasty C, Ycee and Yemi Alade, among others.
