The 2016 Rio Paralympic Games hit a sour note over the weekend when Iranian para cyclist Bahman Golbarnezhad died after being involved in a crash during a race.
Bahman was competing in the men’s C4-5 road race when the crash occurred, reportedly during a mountainous stretch of road.
An ambulance came to cart him away to “the nearby Unimed Rio Hospital in Barra where he passed away soon after arrival,”, a statement addressing the incident read. He died after suffering a cardiac arrest.
An investigation has reportedly been launched into the incident.
“We’re looking to gather as much information as we can and as quickly as possible – it should take a matter of days,” said Piers Jones, sports director of cycling’s governing body UCI.
The 48 year old cyclist also competed in the London Paralympics Games in 2012, and was one of his nation’s top para cyclists. He leaves behind a wife and a son.
