Stevie Wonder, Christina Aguilera and Chaka Khan will be among the friends and fans of Prince who will honour the tragic music icon at an official tribute in his native Minnesota next month.
John Mayer, Tori Kelly, Anita Baker, Mint Condition, and Morris Day and the Time are also confirmed to perform at The Official Prince Tribute in St. Paul on 13 October (16).
Prince’s longtime keyboard player Morris Hayes and members of the singer’s final band 3rdEyeGirl will join the headliners for their performances of the Purple Rain hitmaker’s songs.
“The family is extremely excited to provide an opportunity for the world to participate in the tribute for our brother Prince,” the late star’s sister Sharon Nelson said in a statement.
Reports suggest members of Prince’s inner circle originally planned to hold the tribute show at the new NFL stadium in his hometown of Minneapolis, but the concert will take place at the smaller Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
It will be a very special night for Chaka Khan who is back onstage after a spell in rehab.
The I Feel For You singer, who often collaborated with Prince, was motivated to seek treatment for an ongoing painkiller dependency after learning about her friend’s death in April (16).
Prince overdosed on an opiate he was taking to relieve hip pain and his body was found slumped in an elevator at his Paisley Park home near Minneapolis.
