Kwesi Nyantakyi’s Wa All Stars team claimed their first ever Ghana Premier League title under controversial circumstances as they beat title contenders Aduana Stars 2-1 in a charged game at the Wa Park Wednesday.
All Stars scored twice, and were awarded two penalties, as they picked up the much needed 2-1 win to clinch the ever elusive crown.
Former champions Aduana were on top of the table prior to the game, but only on goal difference, and All Stars knew they needed a simple win to put the title beyond reach of their opponents with one game to spare.
Paul De Vries Asare gave the hosts the lead, before Bright Asare equalised for the visitors. All Stars were awarded, and missed, a penalty earlier in the game that had Aduana up in arms.
But when the referee awarded another penalty to the Wa based team minutes from time, Aduana protested incessantly but the referee was not moved. Saddick Alhassan scored to hand the team owned by the GFA capo their first league title, and the first for any team from the Northern part of the country.
