Government To Increase Public Sector Wages By 12.5% – From January 2017

Labour and Employment Minister - Haruna Iddrisu
Labour and Employment Minister – Haruna Iddrisu

Just in time for election season – exactly how dumb does this government believe us to be?
The Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced government plans to increase public sector salaries by 12.5%.
The increment is set to take place in January 2017, after the elections have been held. It’s almost like it’s a hostage situation for us – elect me or no wage increase.
Haruna Iddrisu announced to Joy Tuesday night after a meeting between the government and organised labour.
“I am happy to inform you that conclusively government together with its social partners namely Minister of Finance, leaders of Public Sector Workers Union, the Ghana Prisons Service, and the Ghana Police Service have concluded negotiation on base pay increases up to 12.5 percent,” he said.
This comes on the heels of a recent 10% increment in the minimum wage.
Prices of goods and services have ballooned over 100% in the past eight years, be it in utilities, transport, or any other sector you can think of. A 12.5% increment slated for election time is little consolation for anyone. The gall of this government is mind boggling.
