Nigeria’s Olympic Team have found themselves the subject of outright embarrassment after it emerged that their Olympic uniforms arrived Thursday, three days to the end of the games on Saturday (today).
The team had been hit by funding issues and thus could not get the jerseys on time, forcing the contingent to compete in the uniforms they used for the last year’s World Athletics Championship.
“We are disappointed and embarrassed. We’ve been wearing kits from the World Athletics Championships,” one athlete, requesting anonymity, told the BBC.
Nigeria’s The Vanguard said the problem originated from the sports ministry, who were holding back in releasing funds, despite a N600m ($1.7m) budget for the games.
The uniforms arrived at a time where majority of the athletes have finished competing.
