One man in Nigeria has found himself on the wrong end of the law after an infuriated neighbour reported him to police, claiming the man had named his dog after his father.
The complainant, whose father was called Alhaji Buhari, claimed his neighbour had named his dog ‘Buhari’ simply to denigrate his late father’s name.
The man, a trader, reportedly got arrested and detained by police after the complaint, Nigeria’s The Vanguard reports.
The police then went after the dog to use as evidence, but the man allegedly informed relatives to kill and eat the dog to leave no trace.
The case seems to be a tribal one, as the man is a southerner who allegedly chose the provocative name to infuriate Northerners in the vicinity.
“He not only named the dog Buhari but boldly wrote it on the body of both sides of the dog and was seen parading the neighbourhood dominated by Northerners with it.” one police source told the newspaper.
The trader is still being held in police custody. A police spokesperson said he would be charged with a breach of peace.
“I have made enquiries. The man bought a dog and inscribed Buhari on both sides of its body.” ASP Abimbola Oyeyemie reportedly said.
“One Mallam lodged a complaint and when our men got there, we found out that it was true. You know such thing can cause serious breach of the peace and ethnic or religious unrest. We are charging him to court for conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.”
He added: “He was arrested last Saturday and we are taking him to court… You know an average Northerner will feel bad over such a thing. It can cause serious ethnic crisis or religious confrontation because when you are relegating such a name to a certain person, you are indirectly insulting him.”
