A group in the Volta Region describing themselves as The Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF), has laid out a plan to secede from Ghana, to create an entirely independent state.
HSGF held a public forum with some opinion leaders in Ho Tuesday, during which they outlined their plans for leaving the country.
The vice chairman of HSGF, Mr G.Y Agrah said that the people of Western Togoland were not full citizens of Ghana, only having joined after the referendum in 1956. He said they were “plebiscite citizens in Ghana” – and thus are now seeking their independence.
The plan is to declare independence for the new Western Togoland state next year, precisely on May 9, 2017.
The territory of the nation, the group said “stretches from Bawku East district in the Upper East region and borders the Volta River up to the Gulf of Guinea.”
They said Ghana’s hold on the territory is illegal and unconstitutional.
The British Togoland territory was formed after the territory then occupied by Germany was divided into British and French Togoland. The British portion voted to join the Gold Coast in a referendum held in 1956, and later became the Volta region when Ghana gained independence in 1957.
