The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), a media watchdog, have released the findings of their July report on the use of indecent language on the airwaves in Ghana.
The report identified the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the worst culprit over the use of language denigrating opponents, with a whopping 17 incidents attributed to the party and its surrogates – a figure over twice the seven reported by the second placed National Democratic Congress (NDC). The NDP, the PPP and the PNC follow in that order.
The MFWA determined this kind of abusive language by looking out for these factors – unsubstantiated allegations, provocative remarks, insulting and offensive comments, remarks endorsing or inciting violence and remarks promoting divisiveness.
Unsubstantiated allegations was by far the most common form of abusive language used.
For radio stations, Montie Fm and Happy Fm recorded the highest number of abusive language being used on their platform – with seven each. Zaa Fm and Okay Fm follow with four apiece, before Tain and Adom Fm’s on three and Hot, Oman and Peace on two.
The project collating this data, the MFWA says, “aims at encouraging people to be measured in their use of language by naming and shaming those who use abusive expressions on radio. Ultimately, the project seeks to contribute to peaceful elections by making political discourse on radio more issues-based rather than the use of abusive expressions that could foment elections-related violence.”
