Former President Kufuor: 4-Year Presidential Term Not Enough

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has repeated himself that, there ought to be an extension of the presidential term in Ghana as the four-year term is not enough.
Kufuor has long been calling for this extension, arguing that to make a substantial impact as a president, 4 years is not enough.
Speaking at the International Society for African Philosophy and Studies (ISAPS) conference on the theme “Democracy Justice and Development In Africa: 50 Years after Independence”, former president Kufuor “criticized the framers of the Constitution for failing to undertake adequate research before deciding on the duration for Presidency,” reports Joy Fm.
According to Kufuor, the first 3-years of governance go into enacting a body of bills and programs—and with election in the 4th year, there’s not enough time to see proper implementation and execution.
J. A Kufuor has in the past called for a 5 year-term, arguing in 2012 that, “If we have a five-year term, the third year would see to the maturing of policies and laws, the fourth year will see the good policies that would serve the nation. By the fifth year when people are canvassing for power, the good works can be judged by all.”
