This is the epitome of embarrassment. The state broadcaster taken in by a cheap internet trick.
How long does it take to fact-check in this day and age?
GTV proved once and for all their redundancy in today’s media landscape tonight when their major 7’oclock news bulleting was taken in by a cheap internet hoax.
A story has been circulating for most of today that former South African President Thabo Mbeki is dead. The story is palpably false, as seen by the fact that the website it’s seen on is cleverly disguised to look like a legit South African site but its not.
More glaringly, reading the entire story would simply let you know it’s a hoax, as it ends with the very visible words….… “and the narrator woke up from his sleep.”
Without any confirmation from any major news outlet, GTV run the story anyway. They have always been viewed as redundant by most of the emerging generations but this takes incompetence to a whole new level.
GTV – and they want tv license fees?
Almost at the same time GTV were running this embarrassment, South Africa’s state broadcaster was broadcasting this.
