A festive atmosphere turned sour – as at least 13 people died during a birthday party at a French bar.
The party was raging at the Cuba Libre bar in the early hours of Saturday when some of the candles on the cake caught fire, lighting up the room, the BBC reports.
The fire really took off due to polystyrene ceiling of the basement where the party was being held. Officials say the compound in the ceiling reacted with the fire, releasing a poisonous gas upon interaction with the fire, killing the inhabitants, mostly by asphyxiation.
Most of those attending the party were between ages 18-25. An official inquiry has been set up into the tragedy, which comes at a time of great circumspection in a country reeling from recent terrorist attacks.
At least six people have also been reported injured, and are receiving treatment.
