Prosecutors overseeing the murder case of the South African blade runner Oscar Pistorius are looking at appealing the six year jail sentence he received, seeing it as too light for the crime committed.
In a statement, they called the sentence ‘too lenient’ and indicated their willingness to seek a longer term.
“The sentence of six years imprisonment, in all the circumstances, is disproportionate to the crime of murder committed (and) shockingly too lenient,” the National Prosecuting Authority said.
Pistorius was initially sentenced to five years on the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter, but prosecutors successfully appealed for the charge to be increased to murder, necessitating a new sentencing hearing.
But Judge Thokozile Masipa only added one year to the initial sentence, meaning Pistorius had to serve just six years for murder when he could have been handed as much as fifteen.
Under the new sentencing arrangement, he would be available for parole after serving three years, but that wouldn’t happen if prosecutors have their way.
Pistorius was placed on trial for the 2013 Valentine’s Day murder of his then girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, who he shot through a bathroom door believing her to be an intruder.
