Ghanaian midfield legend Michael Essien has had his contract with Greek side Panathinaikos terminated by mutual consent.
The Ghanaian midfielder joined the side last year after being released by Italian giants Milan, but the injury problems that have been plaguing him for the past half decade or so followed him to Greece.
On Thursday, both the club and Essien decided to part ways via mutual consent, Ghanasoccernet reports. The decision was predicated on his consistent injury challenges. The official announcement is expected soon.
Essien made his name during a sterling career with English giants Chelsea, in his prime rising to become the world’s no.1 defensive midfielder. Knee injuries towards the end of his Chelsea career reduced the dynamism that was such a key part of his play, and he has been a shell of himself since.
The player would take his time making a decision on which club to join next, the report added.
