Sports Minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye has thrown his weight behind the section of Ghanaians who believe Sulley Muntari should be given a call back to the senior national team after his recent apology.
The 31 year old former Inter and AC Milan midfielder was excommunicated from the team during the last world cup for indiscipline, and was barred from being selected until he apologised. He did that in a letter a few weeks ago.
Coach Avram Grant would soon have to start assembling his team for the 2017 Afcon and 2018 world cup qualifiers, and the sports minister believes the veteran should be given a chance to represent his country again.
“I have heard his statement of apology and I think to some extent it is the right thing he has done. He is a Ghanaian who has realized that what he did in some way was improper and he has apologized and said I am available anytime you want my service, for me it is a good thing he did so it is to the coach to decide if he need him or he doesn’t need him.” He said on TV3.
“Everybody was indisciplined to the extent that the indiscipline was acted towards the minister and I said it wasn’t the right to be done but to ensure discipline, the administrators must be discipline first.
“But what I want to say is that Sulley was wrong and I agree with that no matter what because he could have exercise patience and show some respects to the GFA management member.
“But he now comes out and say I am sorry, I believe in second chances and I believe he sincere with that apology because his colleagues has come out and defend him as well and I believe he has talk to them.”
Muntari currently plays for Ittihad Jeddah in the Emirates. It’s doubtful how useful he would be to a team that has abundant talent in the middle.
