If you have seen the way people crowd by the roadside at the expense of everything and the way grown ups sit to discuss the very telenovela to extremes that leaves you wondering if the characters are not fictional after all then you would know Mercy Asiedu is either in denial or saying something to comfort herself.
The infamous “Kumkum Bhagya” is an Indian telenovela shown on Adom Tv purposely translated into Twi,our local dialect and believe me you, it has a really admirable viewing coverage. The very series that got UTV to join the club with their own bit “Simply Maria” also in Twi.
Speaking on Abusua 96.5fm hosted by its morning show host Kwame Adinkrah, Mercy Asiedu debunked allegations that the Kumawood Movie Industry is waning due to the shift in patronage from their movies to that of Kumkum Bhagya. She contends that there is simply nothing special about the said series and Kumawood is still booming.
“What is so special about Kumkum Bhagya that we have not done some before in this country, the difference is that they are Indians who speak Twi and wear Indian dresses. The movie is repetition of scenes. It’s the same as what we have been doing, Ghanaians don’t appreciate their own, is it possible to send Ghanaian movies to India for translation to be shown on national television, we should appreciate our own, we can do better than what they are doing, Kumkum Bhagya is not a threat to Kumawood, we are also going into production of series, some of their scenes lack quality,” she explained.
She stated that they will be attending a seminar in Koforidua on how to improve themselves and adopt strategies that would grow the industry.
