Seven time champion Roger Federer suffered a shock defeat to Canadian youngster Milos Raonic in their semi final game at the British Open Friday.
Federer was chasing his eighth crown at the All England Club and a record 18th Grand Slam overall, but came up against a determined Raonic who was impatient to stake his claim as part of the elite tennis players currently on the planet.
Raonic won the thrilling five set game 6-3, 6-7, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, battling back from being down two sets to one to tumble possibly the greatest tennis player of all time out in five sets.
Federer, who had to overcome a two set deficit in a gruelling quarter final victory over Marin Cilic, looked tired early on in the game, and increasingly his 34 year old body started to give way as the tie wore on, leading to moments where he had to be treated on court.
Raonic moves on to the final, becoming the first Canadian to make a Grand Slam final – where he awaits the winner of the Andy Murray-Thomas Berdych second semi final clash.
