Iceland were the smallest nation at this year’s European Championships by a mile, their population of 330,000 people roughly equivalent to the size of Leicester, the home of this year’s English Premier League champions.
Yet this tiny nation went all the way to the quarter finals, beating England along the way in one of football’s magical fairy tales. Their fans were easily the best in the tournament, with their now famous Viking clap routine shaking up every stadium they played in.
After their elimination at the hands of France, the heroic team returned home, where they were met by a teeming crowd of supporters at a city square in Reykjavik. Together with the players, the entire square performed the deafening Viking clap in a magnificent moment of camaraderie.
