South African double amputee Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to six years in jail for the 2013 murder of his then girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Pistorius initially received a five year sentence on the charge of culpable homicide (manslaughter), a sentence for which he served ten months before being released on parole.
But the prosecution appealed for the charge to be upgraded to murder, an appeal it won, and thus were fighting for a fifteen year sentence in the murder trial.
However, Judge Thokozile Masipa said mitigating factors for Pistorius, such as rehabilitation and remorse, led to her reducing the sentence.
She therefore sentenced Pistorius to six years in jail, but he would be eligible for parole after two years. Having spent a year in jail already, its not clear if that would count towards his parole time.
Pistorius was arrested for shooting Steenkamp on Valentine’s day three years ago. He claimed he thought there was an intruder in the house, leading to him shooting through the bathroom door.
