Mario Balotelli says that when it came time to choose where to commit his international career to, it was never a choice.
Balotelli chose to play for the land of his adoptive parents when he turned 18 and received his Italian passport. At the time, there was significant clamouring for him to represent the country of his birth parents.
But to Balotelli, that was ‘never going to happen’. He was adopted at the age of 3, and he had never been to Ghana – so to him there was no question who he was pledging his allegiance to.
“Ghana wanted me to play for them, but that was never going to happen. I was born in Italy, grew up in Italy, I’ve never even been to Ghana – even if I will go – so for the law it’s only right that I am Italian.” He told the Italian daily the Corriere dela Serra.
Still, considering the circus his life in the media has become, he added that he might make a different choice if the decision was before him now.
“At the same time, none of this chaos would’ve happened either. I know it seems rough to say this, but if that moment of crisis had arrived when I had to make my decision, I don’t know if I would’ve chosen to play for Italy.
“It would’ve been the fault of a few stupid idiots, but I am not a robot and certain things do really hurt.”
Balotelli also touched on the origins of his famous Mohawk hairstyle.
“My brother Enoch and I had this style since we were young. We liked the idea of Mohican warriors…”
“I will win the Ballon d’Or.” The Liverpool forward promised.
