It still puzzles me that as young people we don’t know who we are. And there rest of the people who are supposed to be focusing on us are clueless and just pay us lip service.
Before I continue, these are few facts I found about young people and young people in this context are people under 35.
There over 2 billion young people over the world with a potential of 1.3 trillion dollars in spending power. We are not a demographic to be ignored by any one. We are group oriented.
You may find us alone at a particular time but we are connected to over 2000 people via facebook, whatsapp, twitter, instagram e.t.c
78% of us want instant gratification also known as “I want what I want, when I want it and I want it now.” 75% of us will go online and search for opinions on products and every other stuff.
We are the only generation that believes if we can’t click on it, it doesn’t exist. We are the most experienced group out there. We would rather buy a nice experience than a nice product.
Our mantra is never before, never again. That’s why we love snapchat. We do a thing once. Funny enough we are the only generation that actually does stuff. Ask anyone about the series they watch and they can give you the intricate details of that series. For example, I watch Scandal, Tyrant, Banshee, How to Get Away with Murder etc and sometimes I think I have enough knowledge and opinions about how the plot and twists should go but then so do anyone who watches every one of these series including Kumkum bBgyia.
The wealth of knowledge available to us now is just a touch/click away. Since I’m in Ghana, I can only talk about what happens in Ghana. When it comes to the youth of Ghana, we’ve given our power away to some 40, 50, 60 year olds who think they know what’s best for us. Nothing is more annoying than some 60 year old potbellied politician going round saying I’m the voice of the youth and I speak for the youth when he has no idea of the things that make or break us.
Most of the time we are being manipulated to live the dreams and aspirations of others. People are just riding on our wave to get to their destination. Well it’s not these peoples’ fault, it’s ours because we are the most hateful and spite generation ever. We tear down each other and we’ve got no chill.
We don’t support each other or cheer each other on. One of us gets a role in a high end movie and we begin to question the qualifications of the person. If one of us picks up an award nomination somewhere, then we begin to raise eyebrows. And the beautiful thing about this is that we don’t need any one to divide and rule us, we are already divided. The reason why we can’t get to where we want to get to and no one takes us serious unless they are using us—because we hate each other.
The fact is we are the most used group of people the world over. We are not serious with our lives. We don’t buy t-bills, insurance or enterprise because we think we have time. But this is the time to do the things that matter, hold conversations that matter, join groups that matter and be all we can be and more.
We keep believing the same lie told to us over and over again. We hold talks and seminars for ourselves and the youngest panellist is about 45 years.
It’s only right that we put each other up for if we don’t take ourselves serious, there’s no way someone else will take us serious. Remember the world buys you at the price you put on yourself.
