When an island of 330,000 people, playing at their first ever major international competition, beats one of the tournament favourites, all hell would predictably break loose in the nation.
Sports caster Gudmundur Benediktsson, who commentates on Iceland’s games for their national television station, has become something of an internet darling throughout the tournament.
In the vein of legendary Italian commentator Tiziano Crudelli, Benediktsson totally loses his sh*t every time Iceland scores a goal, and he was at his best during Monday night’s historic Round of 16 win against England.
Listen to the commentator’s ecstatic commentary on the game below…

After the game, he needled the losing England team, screaming they can leave Europe and go ‘wherever the hell they want’. An apparent reference to the recent Brexit vote…
“You can leave Europe! You can go wherever the hell you want!”
