England national team manager Roy Hodgson has resigned his post after the Three Lions fell to a shock second round exit to minnows Iceland.
The Nordic Island, playing in its first major international tournament, and famously with just a population of 330,000 people; outplayed and outfought a lethargic English side to win the Round of 16 tie 2-1 in Nice.
Hodgson, who’s contract was set to expire at the end of the tourney and had renewal talks scheduled with English FA chiefs, decided to bow out after the ignominious exit.
“I’m sorry it will have to end this way but these things happen,” Hodgson said after the game.
“I hope you will still be able to see an England team in a final of a major tournament soon.
“Now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress of a hungry and extremely talented group of players. They have done fantastically, and done everything asked of them.”
The English FA would now have to make a choice, with qualifiers for Russia 2018 looming. The current favourites are England U-21 manager Gareth Southgate, Hodgson’s assistant and United legend Gary Neville, and Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe.
