Superintendent Cephas Arthur, the Director of Communications at the Ghana Police Service, has said that the Police have no plans to block social media on election day, directly contradicting his boss, the IGP, who proposed the ban.
Speaking in Accra Saturday, Cephas Arthur said the IGP, John Kudalor, had mentioned the ban as an alternative, and not something set in stone.
“The IGP used the word alternatives but it looks as if nobody heard the other alternatives that he mentioned because nobody is discussing that. This was not part of his speech. It was a kind of off the top of his head answer.” He said.
“Let us not be alarmed. The IGP is not about to block social media on election day and we are going to have our social media,”
The proposed ban had enraged the entire populace, with some wondering how a supposed democracy could be thinking of such an anti free speech measure. The IGP, in response, cited countries like Uganda carrying out such measures. As if we are aspiring to be Uganda.
