Labour MP David Lammy has called on the House to ignore the results of Thursday’s EU referendum, calling the vote an ‘advisory, non-binding referendum.’
The United Kingdom voted Thursday to decide whether to stay in or leave the European Union, and the result was a 52-48 victory for ‘leave.’
With the country facing economic uncertainty with the decision to cut off the European trade body, Lammy says the legislature should ignore the results and hold their own vote to stay in the Union.
Lamny, who represents Tottenham and is a former Minister, labelled the results ‘madness’, and called on his colleagues not to heed to it.
“Wake up. We do not have to do this. We can stop this madness and bring this nightmare to an end through a vote in Parliament. Our sovereign Parliament needs to now vote on whether we should exit the EU.” He wrote on twitter.
“The referendum was an advisory, non-binding referendum. The Leave campaign’s platform has already unravelled and some people wish they hadn’t voted to Leave.
“Parliament now needs to decide whether we should go forward with Brexit, and there should be a vote in Parliament next week.
“Let us not destroy our economy on the basis of lies and the hubris of Boris Johnson.”
Parliament would have to ratify the results and trigger the legal clauses for Britain’s exit. However, refusal to heed the will of the people would be certain to cause a huge uproar.
Lammy also quoted prominent ‘Leave’ campaigner Nigel Farage, who had said prior to the referendum that a 52-48 vote would not be a decisive victory.
