It has gotten out of hands—the desperation for money and viewers is surely the cause of this, or else why would local Ghanaian TV stations be going this length to make cheap telenovelas such attractive to Ghanaians?
The success of Adom TV’s Kumkum Bhagya has led to the birth of another, this time from the camp of Despite Group of Companies—UTV.
UTV, arguably the current most watched TV station in Ghana is advertising their new telenovela with Twi voice overs-Simply María, soon to air—and certainly to rival the popularity Kumkum Bhagya has scored.
It’s sad that these cheaply purchased and altered telenovelas have become the sole source of pure entertainment for Ghanaians, hugely patronised to the extent that, they’ve taken TV prime time and even household conversations hostage.
It’s difficult to establish why Ghanaians have become fanatically addicted to these foreign love-centred Tv series.
Just like the ridiculousness of KumKum Bhagya, this new series is not only far stretched with translation, the actors (voice over) talk about plantain, cassava, neat fufu and others. And how this is reconciled with the setting, only God knows.
Chris-Vincent Agyapong Febiri was damn right when he wrote in a recent article on KumKum Bhagya;
Some good number of Ghanaians must be underprivileged when it comes to quality entertainment for them to be cheerily watching what I could not accommodate for even 10 minutes.
It’s not always right to give the people what they yearn for, especially when it’s apparent that their taste has been screwed by the simple fact that all they are accustomed to have been sub-standard. At least, these TV stations in Ghana ought to have a bit of conscience to try and serve the populace with something of respectable standard.
Perhaps, no one has thought about what has become of Ghanaian produced TV content—both movies and TV series since the influx of these telenovelas.
