Actor Leornado DiCaprio has been ordered to answer questions in a deposition in a $50m defamation lawsuit brought against the makers of the 2013 blockbuster ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’
Investment banker Andrew Greene has sued the movie, claiming the portrayal of Nicky “Rugrat” Koskof, played by P.J Byrne, was based on him and has been defamatory to his reputation.
Lawyers for Greene has sought to depose DiCaprio, claiming he had knowledge of the scripting of the screenplay. His lawyers had argued that the current Oscar winner did not write the movie nor direct it.
However, U.S. Magistrate Judge Steven Locke ruled for Greene, ordering the actor sit down to be deposed by plaintiff’s lawyers.
Greene’s contention is with the character of Koskof, who he argues is based on him. Koskof in the movie is the childhood friend of the movie’s protagonist, Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio’s character), who helps him run his investment scam and was featured in several depraved scenes. He argues Koskof is based on him, and the portrayal has defamed him- arguing it shows him as “a criminal and drug user with misogynistic tendencies.”
‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ was nominated for five Academy Awards.
